*Pop Art Portraits*

In this lesson, students will be taking their original portrait and manipulating it into the style of Andy Warhol, using their knowedge of printing.

First explore the work of Andy Warhol and Pop Art (attached video). Pay attention to the colouring and lines.

Student will then take their original portraits and determine which parts of the portrait will be done in each colour.

Students have worked with basic printing in previous years and will now explore how to print with multiple layers.

Once students have decided the 2 or 3 block colours they will be using, they will need to carve their image onto their foam printing boards. They will need to carve out any area that is not to be coloured.

For example if the eyes and mouth are to be coloured blue, everything in the image other than the eyes and mouth will be carved out. It is important students keep their stencil as they will be using it to produce many carved boards for their print.

It is recomended that the general outline of the face be printed first. Allow students to explore the technique befor printing onto their master portrait.

For further background information on Pop Art, students may wish to visit the following website. The site also contains templates for students who either missed the initial portrait lesson or require additional scaffolding.
