Body - Movement and Mime

Exploration of Movement:

Students explore their body’s natural movements through interpretive dance. Play a short snippet (approximately 1 minute) of each song, instruct students to allow their body’s to move in a natural response to the music. After each song ask students to describe the way they moved for example big movements, fast movements.

Charades:

Students split into groups of 4 and play a game of charades. Students take it in turns to act out a word chosen from the “ideas box”. Whilst students are acting out their word they must not speak. The remaining members of the team need to guess what the person is acting out. For this activity, students have 1 minute to guess the correct answer. The person who guesses correctly goes next, if the answer is not given, students choose/volunteer to go next.

Mime Technique:

Students are to gather in a drama circle standing up. Ask students what they can tell you about mime. General responses should reveal the common "box mine". Demonstrate an effective and non effective box mime and ask students which looked better. Prompt students to identify the difference between the two. Explain to students the importance of a point of reference within mime. Demonstrate to students how to do the box mime. Students are to take out their ipads and locate the “Expert Village” channel on youtube. They can do this by typing “Basic Mime Lessons” or searching for the channel. From here they can explore a variety of basic tutorials on miming.

Students are to work together in their group of 4 to develop 3 mime techniques. During this time the teacher will be roaming the room, providing assistance where needed and monitoring behaviour. Working in their groups of 4, students are to devise a short (1-2 minute) mime scene using the skills they have developed.

Conclusion

Students take a seat on the floor leaving space out the front as a stage. Ask for a volunteer group to perform first, if no volunteers arise, randomly select a group. Prompt students to provide positive peer feedback and identify the what happened in the scene they just watched.
