*Self Portraits*

To begin, have students look at their faces in a mirror, paying attention to the shape of their faces and the placement of features such as eyes, nose and mouth.

Following the steps outlined, instruct students to draw their head and lightly draw guidelines for they eyes, nose and mouth. At this point, students will need to photocopy their work for use in later lessons.

Position the 'Mix and Match' features around the room and allow students to explore which feature best suits them. Students may wish to practice drawing the key features in their art folios before they draw them onto their portrait. Students may also wish to choose a more advanced mouth. These images can be found through the links at the bottom of this page. At this point students will again need to photocopy their work for use in later lessons.

Once students have drawn their key features they may shade their portrait using their prior knowledge of texture for hair, lips and eybrows.

This activity is likely to last 2-3 sessions. As long as students are engaged in the task and completing work, they can continue.
