Introduction

As students begin to enter the room play "lion king flash mob" clip. Students should immediately be engaged and proceed to sit on the floor quietly while the video plays. For students who do not do this, gently urge them to do so. A brief "I saw this on youtube last night and thought id share it" will suffice as explanation. This clip is merely to engage students and prepare them on the floor ready for the class.

Body

  • Inform students that they will be continuing with the notion of emotion within music as previously taught. This lesson is to look at the effect music plays within movies. Prompt students to think of a scene in a movie that made them feel "emotional", discuss a few examples. Students should identify that the music played has a vital role in portraying emotion.

  • Play the clip "How music can change a film". Prompt students to listen to the music and identify whether each alteration in music portrays the scene differently. Discuss students ideas at the conclusion of the video.

  • Play the clip "Genre change project". Inform students that the video is a real movie promotion and that the only alteration is to the music. Discuss the effect the music has on the video.

  • Inform students that they are to work in pairs to plan and create a short scene. They must then add music to their scene to alter the mood. Show clip "the effect music has on movies" (start at 15sec. end at 3:24). Allow students to use this clip as inspiration. Students are allowed to move about the school yard without disrupting other classes, consequences apply for misbehaviour. A plan must be showed to the teacher and contract signed prior to videoing. Inform students that they have the rest of the session and the next session to work on this task; there is no need to rush.

Conclusion

5 minutes before the end of class, students are to ensure their work has been saved and return video devices. A brief reflection should be held for students to acknowledge the quality and quantity of work they have completed, (Thumbs up for grade 6 standard, thumbs to the side if average, thumbs down if below standard).
