The Arts. Level 6: in Music, students listen to and discuss the mood created in selected advertisement jingles or sound tracks for a cartoon or a theme for a movie character,

ACARA

The Arts. Years 5 & 6: Students learn how rhythm, pitch and form are used to communicate meaning. As they make and respond to music, students explore meaning and interpretation, forms and elements of music. They evaluate the use of elements of music in music they listen to, perform and compose.

Introduction

Students are to be sitting/lying on the floor witht heir eyes closed. Prompt students to sit/lay in a comfortable position away from distractions. Play the original "Pink Panther" clip, instruct students to listen and take note of how they feel. Next play the edited version of the "Pink Panther", again, instruct students to listen and take not of how they feel. Students open their eyes and discuss the difference between the two pieces of music. Do they know the song? How did each piece make them feel? Do they know why they felt this way?

Body

  • Explain how classical composers relied on the music to portray emotion/messages more than lyrics. Revisit the idea of minor and major keys. Do students remember the difference? How does each key make you feel? (Major = Happy, bright, sense of resolution. Minor = sad, dark, uncertainty). What would changing from major to minor keys suddenly create? (Tension).

  • Instruct students to take their coloured pencils out and sit at their desks. Supply 4 a5 sheets of paper to each student. As each piece of music (Perfect happiness, Prelude & Piano Concerto) is played, students are to select appropriate colours to describe how the piece makes them feel. Alert students to the fact that they have minimal time for each "drawing" and that pictures do not necessarily have to be "real" (see work samples). After each piece of music select student briefly share their drawing and the emotion they felt. Encourage student that there is no right or wrong and that everyone feels something different. What key (Major or Minor) was each piece played in? How do we know?

  • Play the final piece of music, (O Fortuna), again have student draw how the piece makes them feel. Briefly share the drawings and discuss this piece of music. Have they heard it before? Where? Why would this piece be used? what key was this piece played in? How do we know? Ensure each "drawing" has the title an key. Instruct students to place these drawings into their music folders.

Conclusion

Allow students to take out their ipads and open the "touch piano" app. Model using the smartboard/projector where the notes are, if students feel confident allow them to model. As a class read the notes out aloud, then with the volumn turned off, play the notes on their ipads. Allow students to practice for a few minutes then play as a class at half volumn. Finally turn the ipads to full volumn and play as a class. Inform students that they will be using/playing this song in a follow up lesson where they will devise a scence to accompany the music. Ipads are to be returned and students may resume pack up routines.
