Why Teach Art?

Teaching visual art in the general primary school classroom has been researched and demonstrated by educational theorists over the last century. Visual art education plays a vital role in developing self-expression, critical awareness and creativity within children. Theorists such as Gardener (1983) and Vygotsky (2004) have argued that creative thought can be applied to all areas of life, and see the teaching of visual art as a means for developing a child’s creativity and ability to critically analyse (Bowell, 2011) art-works. A rich arts program assists in transferring these skills across all areas of a child’s life.

Unit Overview - Exploration of Portraits

Lessons are not intended to be completed within a single art session (1 hour) and may take multiple sessions for students to complete.

This sequence of art lessons explores the multiple ways of creating a portrait. Students will explore the work of Pablo Picasso and cubism, Andy Warhol and Pop art, and the technique of printing. Students will develop their skills of carving and explore colour combinations symbolic of the artists studied.
