Unit Context

The following activities are designed as part of a 12 week dance unit for level 6 students. A minimum of 12 one hour sessions is necessary for effective completion of this unit. Activities are aimed at students with mild to moderate dance abilities, and allow for a variety of capabilities to succeed.

 

During this unit, students will explore a variety of dance styles including hiphop and bollywood, as well as choreographic devices, and physical and techinical skills.

 

The lessons described herein are not sequential nor do they demonstrate

the entirety of the unit. Students will need to explore an improvisation and

choreography activity with a focus on hiphop style dance before they can

participate in the problem solving activity described. 

 

Activities described are not intended to last the duration of the 60 minute

lesson, it is advised that students are given time during each lesson to

develop and rehearse their performance.  

 

At the conclusion of this unit students will have:

  • learnt about waysto design, improvise, represent, interpret, make and

         present a dance composition (AusVELS level 6)

  • the ability to mirror the movements of a partner and then perform the same

         movements expressing contrasting emotions (AusVELS level 6)

  • an emerging understanding of dance elements, principles and conventions

         (AusVELS level 6)

  • the ability to independently and collaboratively experiment with and apply a

         range of skills, techniques and processes to plan, develop, refine, make and 

         present a dance performance (AusVELS level 6)

  • extended their awareness of the body as they combine movements that use body parts and actions with those involving body zones and bases (ACARA level 6).

  • extended their understanding and use of space, time, dynamics, and relationships including performing in groups (ACARA level 6)

  • extended their use of combinations of fundamental movement skills and technical skills developing competence, body control and accuracy (ACARA level 6)

  • explored meaning and interpretation, forms and elements of dance includng the use of space and energy in dances (ACARA level 6)

  • developed their ability to evaluate the use of dance elements in dances they perform (ACARA level 6)

  • extended their understanding of safe dance practice, identified appropriate warm-up and cool down procedures, performed within their own body capabilities and worked safely in groups (ACARA level 6)
